  28. A. CD-ROM caching
  29. =================
  30.  
  31. To increase the speed of your program, you should use
  32. SMARTDRV. EXEís CD-ROM caching.  This option is available to DOS 6.2.  Here are the 
  33. steps to enable CD-ROM caching setup:
  34.  
  35. 1. In your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, make sure that a CD-ROM
  36.    extensions program, such as MSCDEX, is loaded before 
  37.    SMARTDRV.  For example:
  38.  
  39.         C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10
  40.  
  41.         C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /L 2048
  42.  
  43. 2. Give smartdrv the default cache size of 2048K as shown in
  44.    the example above.

  48. B. Improving Performance
  49. ========================

  51. If you notice that your game is running slowly, setting your
  52. video driver to 256 color mode may improve performance.  For further
  53. information on setting color mode refer to the documentation
  54. provided by your video card manufacturer.

  58. C. Trouble Shooting
  59. =======================
  60.  
  61. 1. Computer is accessing the hard drive too frequently
  62. ------------------------------------------------------    
  63.  
  64.   If your computer appears to be accessing the hard drive 
  65.   too frequently, you may want to reduce your windowís cache
  66.   size in order to increase your available memory.
  67.  
  68.   For Windows 3.1 systems, add the following to your 
  69.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  70.     c:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 2048 128 /V
  71.  
  72.   For Windows 3.11 systems, please do the following:
  73.     1. From Program Manager, open the group named "Main".
  74.     2. Double click on the icon named "Control Panel".
  75.     3. From within the Control Panel, double click the icon
  76.        named "Enhanced".
  77.     4. A window named "Enhanced" appears. Click the 
  78.        button named "Virtual Memory...".
  79.     5. A window named "Virtual Memory" appears.  Click the 
  80.        button labeled "Change>>".
  81.     6. At the bottom of the window, click the "use 32-bit
  82.        File Access" check box if itís not already checked.
  83.     7. Adjust the chase size to 128(K).
  84.     8. Click the "OK" button.
  85.     9. You are prompted to restart Windows.  Click the
  86.        "Restart Windows" button.
  87.  
  88.     As a general rule for 3.1 and 3.11 Windows systems,
  89.     allowing your swap file to be the same size as you RAM
  90.     helps to optimize this application.  For example, a machine
  91.     with 4 MB RAM should have a swapfile of 4096K.  To change
  92.     the swapfile size, follow steps 1 to 5 described above and 
  93.     change the number box named "New Size" to the new swapfile
  94.     size you want to use.

  96. 2. "Blue Tortoise Error - SHARE.EXE is required
  97.     to run Blue Tortoise"

  100.   If you encounter this error message, add SHARE.EXE to your
  101.   "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file and re-boot your system.  For further
  102.   information on the use of SHARE.EXE refer to the "MS-DOS
  103.   Userís Guide and Reference".  If you are using Windows for   
  104.   Workgroups 3.11, "SHARE.EXE" is automatically enabled
  105.   without modifying the "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file.

  108. 3. Canít open coloring book properly
  109. ------------------------------------    
  110.  
  111.   If you run into problems opening the coloring book, the
  112.   directory on your hard drive that stores all the coloring
  113.   books files may not be set up properly.  To correct this
  114.   problem, try running the Blue Tortoise "SETUP.EXE" again.

  118. 4.Canít set sound volume from Blue Tortoise
  119. -------------------------------------------

  121.   Not all PC sound boards support programmed volume
  122.   adjustment.  If your sound board doesnít support volume
  123.   adjustment, changing the volume setting in option scenes
  124.   has no effect on the sound.

  127. 5. Animation/movies donít play
  128. ------------------------------

  130.   If you run into problems with the animations/movies
  131.   playback, you may not have the most up-to-date Video for
  132.   Windows drivers.  The current Video for Windows driver,
  133.   version 1.1e, is provided on this CD-ROM. Try installing
  134.   the video for Windows driver from the WINVIDEO directory on
  135.   this disc.  To install these drivers:
  136.     1.From the Program Manager, select Run from the File
  137.       menu.
  138.     2.In the Run dialog box, type:
  139.         drive:\WINVIDEO\SETUP.EXE
  140.       where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM disc
  141.       drive.
  142.     3.Press Enter or click the OK button.

  145. 6. Animations/movies on ATI graphics card donít play properly
  146. -------------------------------------------------------------    
  147.  
  148.   If you are using an ATI Graphics card, you may experience 
  149.   video problems when movies are played.  If so, disable the
  150.   video acceleration feature of your card.  For further
  151.   information, refer to the documentation provided by ATI.

  153.   If you are using ATIís MACH drivers, your system may run
  154.   into problems with animations/movies playback.  For further
  155.   information about updated video drivers, contact ATI.
